Line Breeding Chickens: Preserving Traits Through Generations
In our flock at Lunaria Estate, we don’t just raise chickens—we raise generations. One of the most powerful tools for maintaining and improving traits like temperament, broodiness, foraging instinct, resilience, and even feather pattern is line breeding.
Unlike random mating or hybridizing, line breeding involves selectively breeding birds that are related—usually back to a standout rooster or hen—to preserve specific qualities within the flock. Done thoughtfully, it’s not about inbreeding for novelty, but about intentionally reinforcing the traits that help chickens thrive in a natural, free-range setting.
Here’s why we practice line breeding:
• Broodiness & mothering: Most hatchery birds have lost the instinct to go broody. We breed from hens who still carry that spark.
• Hardiness: Birds born here, raised on this land, through our Vermont winters, are more naturally equipped to thrive here.
• Temperament: We want peaceful roosters and confident, smart hens. Line breeding helps us refine the balance we love.
• Sustainability: Instead of always bringing in new genetics, we focus on making the flock self-sustaining, with the health and behavior we want right here.
Of course, line breeding comes with responsibility. We avoid pairing close siblings and track traits carefully to ensure we’re breeding for strength, not narrowing the gene pool blindly. Lunaria Estate Chickens are perfect for our rocky hillside where predators roam. Our chickens free range successfully with some rules in place to keep them safe. We have removed genetic traits like foot feathers, large combs and light plumage because those traits were problematic. Our chickens are bold and very curious. They are total foodies who will try to snatch food from your hand if you happen to eat in front of them. The Rooster is protective but so far has not attacked any humans.
