An Invitation from BB Lane Garden: Come Meet Our Mother Hen & Newborn Chicks!
It’s a rare and beautiful thing: a mother hen raising her chicks the natural way. Most chicks these days are hatched in incubators, never meeting a parent, and rarely seeing the outdoors. Even most homesteaders do not hatch eggs the natural way because broody hens are a rarity. But here at Lunaria Estate, we do things differently.
This June, Friends of BB Lane Gardens are invited to witness something special—our broody hen has successfully hatched a clutch of chicks, and they’ll be out exploring the world together, just as nature intended.
We have two flocks now: our original free-range adults and the new mama with her babies, who’ll remain a separate unit for at least six weeks. Come see how they live, forage, and interact with one another. You’ll also meet our rooster, Shag, who plays an essential role in the dynamic—keeping watch, teaching the young ones, and maintaining harmony in the flock.
Want to help out?
We’re looking for a dedicated “chicken buddy” or two to keep an eye on the flocks during this precious time during our vacation this summer. If you’re curious about natural chicken keeping or just want an excuse to hang out with some charming birds, this is a special opportunity.
When it comes to handling, Mama Hen won’t let you easily pick them up and is very protective. If you want to hold a chicken, try Goose. She’s a Barred Rock who loves being picked up and held. Just make sure you keep an eye on the Rooster so he doesn’t peck you when you go to pick her up. He’s a super friendly guy so just talk nicely and calm so he knows you’re friendly.
More details and visit scheduling coming soon—let us know if you’d like to be part of this sweet, down-to-earth chapter at the estate.
